UAMTE meeting report

Saturday I attended and presented at the Utah Association of Math Teacher Educators (UAMTE) meeting in SLC and benefited greatly.Catherine Lewis of MILLS College presented an excellent keynote on Lesson Study. Catherine illustrated the process using video vignettes and made a strong case for its benefit. Resources she suggested for further learning about lesson study: an NSF funded Lesson Study Group at Mills College, A Handbook of Teacher Led Instructional Change published by Research for Better Schools (RBS), the National Staff Development Council, ENC, and the Teaching Gap (Stigler and Hebert, 1999).

I attended a discussion group facilitated by Damon Bahr of BYU that focused on finding the balance between teaching for procedural and conceptual knowledge. I also attended a presentation by Blake Peterson of BYU that reported research comparing the presence in US and Japanese preservice training of discussion related to classroom management.
